"We are not our best intentions. We are what we do best."
Amy Dickinson
Here is the weekly recap though a bit late because I have been everywhere but campus. This past week was spring break but unlike other college kids who were able to go home or go on a nice girls' trip to the beach as an athlete, I wasn't able to leave. In the past two weekends, my team and I have played 6 matches and in between, we did have a bit of time to ourselves which was nice. This past weekend we played out in Houston, Texas and yes, we drove out Thursday before the boys played on Friday. All 11 of us plus our coach in a van for close to seven hours, it wasn't the most pleasant thing but at least the music taste in the van was good so we blew through so many Spotify playlists. The matches were not the best, the boys played Friday, Saturday and Monday while we girls played just Saturday, Sunday and about five minutes on Monday. Unfortunately, we girls lost everything but the boys won against Prairie View on Monday so congrats to them. Now back to our five minutes on Monday, so originally the plan was to be back on campus on Sunday night but the weather took a turn and we got rained out mid-match on Sunday. My score when we stopped was 4-6, 4-5, and 30 and I was serving. This is the score no one ever wants to have to stop on and it was the elephant in the room for the rest of the day. It also wasn't helpful that our team score was 0-3 meaning that if I lost everyone else would stop and the team would lose. Spoiler it lasted about five minutes, three points. In college, there is no ad scoring which means that if the score gets to 40 which is a deuce then the next point decides the game. This made this situation even worse. I got up to the line, everyone was watching me including my mother who had come to watch me and my heart was racing, the only thought in my head was don't double fault. . . I didn't double fault but the next forehand, straight to the fence. I was pissed, 30-40, now my heart was racing even faster. Again I told myself not to double fault, again I didn't and I got the point. 40-40 deciding point, I got up to the line and my heart was calmer, I could do it, and I forgot to remind myself to not double-fault because on match point to save the match I double-faulted and I cried. That was one of the hardest moments so far this year because I felt a little like I failed the team, and I couldn't save it but all the girls told me differently. I was so happy to see my mom but I was so bummed that she only got to see 3 points. Overall the weekend was a loss for both teams but we also learned from it and I got a chance to see my mom which is something I will never complain about!
SPOTLIGHT!
This week's spotlight is going to be on Spring because it starts today! To bring in Spring is to bring in freshness and newness. In nature Spring is the time for new life to be brought into the world, plants and animals are growing and being born and the world turns green with life around us. However, it doesn't have to be secluded to the nature around us. We can use Spring as a bringer of new for ourselves as well. As the weather turns warmer and the snow melts (if there is any outside your window) Springs bring a time of change. People always use the term "Spring Cleaning" when they are switching their houses from their winter escapes to a new spring and summer escape. Blankets and jackets get put into storage to make room for dresses and shorts, windows are thrown open to bring in the best air freshener, and nature and our whole worlds are switched into a new stage of the year. But, can we also use it to switch our minds, clean out the old habits, and bring in the new ones that we want to explore to make our lives better and healthier? I challenge all of you to use this Spring, today to change the perspective on your lives, build a new habit, and break an old one you may have been wanting to leave behind. Spring Clean your life and make it better!
we love you
