"Easter is the soul's first taste of spring."
Richelle E. Goodrich
Happy belated Easter to everyone! This time a year ago I was overseas in Serbia and spent Easter with my grandparents in Belgrade. However, this year I was able to be home and spend it with my family. Due to the holiday, we had a three-day weekend which gave me a chance to sneak home. I did miss yesterday's class but when I told my teachers why they were so nice and understanding and told me not to worry one bit and just enjoy the time at home. Being able to get away for the weekend to go home is something that I love about college. It isn't over an ocean and it isn't close enough to make it to family dinner every week. It is the perfect distance to be there when I need it but also be far enough away to not be a crutch. It was so fun to see my family and my dog after one of the longest times away from home.
This past week was just full go anticipation of going home. It was also one of the harder training weeks as our coach made us finally do some on-court conditioning which was very needed. There are butterflies in everyone's stomachs for this coming week though. Thursday both women and men are going to be playing Nichols again but closer this time, Friday we play Hinds Community College at home and then Saturday we play Jackson State in Vicksburg. To get into the SWAC conference champions we need to beat Jackson State and it is the elephant in the room. I am hopeful that the team will pull through with energy and fight for our spot in the championships but also accept that we are all injured and tired and we will do everything we can to get what we deserve!
SPOTLIGHT!
This week's spotlight is going to be about something that I am slowly learning one of the most important things every one of us has. Happiness. Everyone's lives have ups and downs but it is up to us to decide how we handle both. I am learning now while in college that it is really up to me to decide whether I am happy or not, no one can decide it for me. Whether I wake up in a bad mood or a good one is not decided by the day before or how well I slept. Happiness is connected to health in a way that always interested me. When we are in a constant state of stress or sadness the body does take a toll. Being in a constant state of fight or flight takes a toll and depression is very real and something that affects millions of people. After being so afraid that it might take a real hold of me I have decided that no matter what happens, how my day goes, or how my life might be going I won't let that happen. Nothing in the world is worth more than my health and my happiness because without it I cannot do what I love the most which is help others! Take this spotlight as an opportunity to look inwards at yourself where you might be with your health and happiness and how one might be leeching on the other. You may have to take a step back and be honest with yourself and once you are, how are you going to make it better, or how are you gonna continue crushing it? Despite the situation you may be in, the period of your life you are in, and the time of day it may be. Nothing is more important than your health and your happiness. Chose to smile because it takes more muscles to frown and chose to laugh because it is beautiful. Go dance to your favorite songs to get your lymphatic system moving and go enjoy the life you have been given!
