"We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are"
Max Depree
I've decided to combine these past two weeks for a couple of reasons the two being 1. I was working on posting a bigger post on the plastic crisis and 2. it was a slow and boring week and it was gonna be followed by a faster more eventful week so I simply decided to combine the two!
Last week was a bit of a drag, we girls had no matches because our season is now officially over as of our last match against Ole Miss while the boys had a match at LSU on Monday. I was super jealous to not be able to play them but I did have some school to get done and it would have interfered as I have written about before I am a student-athlete and though I sometimes wish to be only an athlete school must be a priority. They played better than I expected and even had the opportunity to win a match or two though they were not able to finish and win they did battle and it was fun to watch over the live stream that LSU has. We had a student-athlete banquet which was fun to dress up and take some pictures but also be able to get rewarded for all the work we have all done this past semester. I won the coach's leadership award which I got for being a team leader and helping out as much as I could to make the season run just a little bit smoother. The next day on Thursday the boys and some of the girls one to the SWAC conference tournament in New Orleans where the boys played but unfortunately the girls just missed qualifying. On Friday the boys played and beat Southern University but on Saturday they however couldn't keep the momentum and lost to Alabama State University. The matches were well played and compared to when our boys played them during the season it was much improved which was one of the biggest takeaways from the match. After the match, the emotions were running high and there were some tears spilled cause it was one of our boys last season. It was fun to go with and be able to cheer for them and help out, though I am disappointed we didn't get to play as well but as everyone knows we will be back next year to win the whole thing as we now have the motivation to do it!
The weekend wasn't just tennis though, as it is natural we did go explore a bit of New Orleans including Canal and Bourbon Street which were fun. We had a team dinner at Hard Rock Cafe which was fun and before we left we had to go get some beignets and they were so good! Exploring a new place made me so happy to bring the adventurer in me out again after being put away for the longest it has been in a long time. Bringing this season to a close it had its ups and downs but will be one of the most memorable tennis experiences I will ever have. Between the van rides and adventures at each match we have had the number of memories is uncountable and contains a very diverse amount of happier and sadder memories that I will always be able to hold with me. Lastly, I wanted to express my joy in saying that I have been blogging officially for over a year now. As always thank you to everyone who has been with me in this journey of Where In The World Is Zoe for the past year and I am excited to see where it takes me in the future.
SPOTLIGHT!
This week's spotlight is on long-term solutions versus "quick fixes." In every situation, problem, or break there is always a choice you can make. Do I want a long-term solution or a quick fix in other words it may seem like the same or similar but in action they are very different. If a pipe breaks in the basement there are two different things that you could do. Yes, you could call a plumber and have them come and properly fix it but how long would that take and how much money would it cost, the other option would be to throw some tape on it till it stops leaking and wait for it to break again to just throw some more tape on. This is a visual representation of a long-term solution compared to a quick fix and it is the same for every situation. In health, if you are getting sick often the quick fix is to pop some pills and get better for a bit, or you figure out why you might be getting sick and how habits or everyday things can make it so you don't. Just like the plumber coming to properly fix the pipe which would require proper tools, time, and experience for the long-term solution finding the reason you are not healthy is a long-term solution to your health. Countless other decisions in life require a decision between a long-term and quick fix. In the battle for the environment, there are endless "quick fixes" that people are making and trying to use but very few long-term solutions that have been accepted. Picking up trash in clean-up projects is just a quick fix to the big plastic crisis and switching cars to electric isn't going to solve the whole air pollution problem. These quick fixes are ways for people to say "See I did something, happy?" As helpful as quick fixes can be in the long-term scale of anything they are almost worse than doing something because they take away the focus from the problems that require the long-term solution to be solved. I challenge everyone this coming week to catch themselves making a quick fix that can easily be replaced with a long-term solution and to make the choice to switch to that long-term solution.
